KLIA aerotrain to undergo overnight maintenance starting Aug 18

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will begin scheduled overnight maintenance on its aerotrain system from next Monday (Aug 18), as part of ongoing efforts to optimise performance and enhance service reliability.
The maintenance work will run daily for two weeks during non-peak hours — between 12:00am and 5:00am — to minimise passenger disruption, according to Malaysia Airports in a statement on Friday.
During this time, the aerotrain service will be temporarily unavailable, with airside shuttle buses provided to ensure uninterrupted connectivity between the main terminal building and the satellite building.
Malaysia Airports managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the scheduled works are based on real-time operational data and are crucial to maintaining the system’s efficiency.
“We are proactively fine-tuning the aerotrain system based on real-time data and ongoing insights gathered since its launch. These scheduled works are essential to ensure optimal system responsiveness, safety and long-term reliability,” he said.
As part of broader infrastructure upgrades, KLIA is also introducing an automatic vehicle wash plant (AVWP) — the first of its kind for the KLIA aerotrain. The AVWP will replace the previous manual washing method, improving fleet maintenance standards and supporting the long-term upkeep of the system.
“These ongoing enhancements reflect our forward-looking approach to infrastructure upkeep and service quality. Together, these initiatives underscore our determination to deliver a seamless and dependable travel experience at KLIA,” Mohd Izani added.
Further planned improvements include refinements to the aerotrain’s signalling system, informed by train movement patterns and operational data since the service commenced on July 1, 2025.
Technology provider Alstom, which supports KLIA’s aerotrain operations, will use the maintenance window to conduct early testing of a forthcoming signalling software update.
“While the update has already been thoroughly validated through simulation, this additional step reflects our proactive approach and ongoing commitment to excellence,” said Alstom Malaysia country managing director Sim Ooi Kok in the same statement.
Malaysia Airports said since beginning its service, the aerotrain has carried over two million passengers, completing 18,800 trips and logging over 1,100 hours of operations.
