KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 11): A joint venture between Malaysian automaker Proton and Chinese carmaker Geely is looking to set up an electric vehicle (EV) factory in Thailand, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Wednesday.

Srettha was speaking at a joint press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on an official visit to Kuala Lumpur.

"They look to set up an EV factory in Thailand, which later today, we will have a meeting and hopefully, a clear next step can be established and move forward quickly," Srettha said.

The prime minister did not provide any other details.

Proton is majority owned by Malaysian firm DRB Hicom, while Geely has a 49.9% stake.

Earlier on Wednesday, DRB Hicom signed an agreement with Geely for the development of an automotive hub in Malaysia in which the Chinese firm is expected to invest US$10 billion (RM47.3 billion).
